GMS teacher Brad Herlocker has been selected as a recipient of the Dr. Andy Tompkins Leadership Award and was recognized during the Greenbush Superintendent Forum on Thursday, Sept. 27.

The Greenbush Leadership Academy and the Learning Tree Institute sponsor the Dr. Andy Tompkins Leadership Award.

The mission of this award is to recognize academy graduates who accept a new leadership position in their school district upon completing the Greenbush Leadership Academy.

The award is named after Dr. Tompkins who is currently president and CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents. He previously served as Dean of the School of Education at Pittsburg State University and as Kansas Commissioner of Education.

Dave DeMoss, director of the Learning Tree Institute, said, “It speaks volumes that Dr. Tompkins personally recognized and presented the award to each award winner.”

Mr. Herlocker is a sixth and seventh grade social studies teacher at Girard Middle School and coaches the Girard High School girls’ basketball team. This year he is also serving as athletic co-director at GMS.

Regarding this award, Mr. Herlocker said, “Andy Tompkins is well known in Kansas as one of education’s great champions. To win an award that bears his name is an honor.”

For his achievement Mr. Herlocker received a plaque and $1,000.

GMS principal Randy Heatherly said, “Girard was one of the founding districts for the Greenbush Leadership Academy and continues to support the Academy each year by sending one or two staff members for these leadership training opportunities.

“During the 2011-2012 school year, Brad Herlocker did an outstanding job representing our district at the Leadership Academy. He was chosen to participate in the program due to his leadership potential evidenced by his classroom teaching skills, successful coaching experiences, and the completion of his master’s degree in school administration.

“We are very proud of Mr. Herlocker for being named a recipient of the Dr. Andy Tompkins Leadership Award. This award is given annually to Leadership Academy graduates who use the training in an administrative role in their school district. As a proud member of the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center, we appreciate the staff at Greenbush providing this great professional development opportunity and allowing Girard the opportunity to participate each year.”
