Just in time for spring, brilliantly colored tropical flowers will be blooming on the walls of the Beverly J. Corcoran Gallery, Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium.
The flowers, as well as exotic fruits and horses are in paintings created by artist Aura Rojas Samuelson. She does some abstract paintings as well. Her work will be on display in the gallery throughout April, and some pieces will be available for purchase.
Originally from Colombia, Samuelson now lives in Pittsburg.
“We have the beautiful flowers, fruits, birds and animals in Colombia,” she said.
Samuelson said that painting was originally a hobby for her.
“I had a business in Columbia, a restaurant,” she said. “I had 75 on my team there. I put my paintings in the restaurant. But one day I was thinking that I need to rest, my life is very crazy.”
She sold her business, went to a university and studied painting.
“My teachers looked at my painting one day and said it is beautiful,” she said.
Samuelson, who has an adult daughter living in Colombia, came to the United States after marrying an American, helicopter pilot Michael Samuelson.
“I love Pittsburg,” Samuelson said. “It is so relaxing.”
But she’s still busy, and now works at Harp’s in Joplin.
“It’s a very nice place, and we make everything fresh,” Samuelson said. “I work every day, but when I come back I’m busy with my painting.”
Among her favorite paintings are the flowers, fruits, a bald eagle and the horses.
“When I was in Colombia, I had 15 horses,” the artist said. “I sold my horses there, but one day I would like to buy a horse here.”
One special painting shows a horse standing at the door of a house.
“That horse was the best horse in Colombia,” Samuelson said.
But she chooses to look ahead, not back.
“I like to live my life day by day,” Samuelson said. “I don’t like to think about the past. Today is the best day of my life.”
She said that she’s very excited about having the exhibit at Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium.
“I’m going to have reception April 5 in the gallery, and I will make some good things for the refreshments,” Samuelson said.
