PSU Veterans Memorial
“Lessons of Service” will be the theme for the 2011 Veterans Day observance at  10 a.m. at the Pittsburg State University Veterans Memorial.

Pittsburg Community Middle School choirs will perform the National Anthem and a medley of George M. Cohan patriotic songs. Also participating in the service will be sixth grade students from Pittsburg USD 250 and St. Mary’s Colgan Schools.

All veterans present and their families will be recognized, including 17 who are having new engraved pavers installed at the memorial.

An addition to this year’s observance will be a contracting ceremony for six new ROTC cadets.

Patriotic celebration
Pittsburg American Legion Post 64, American Legion Post 394 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1158 will have an annual Veterans Day celebration at the Post 64 and Post 394 post home, 2815 N. Joplin.

Doors will open at 10 a.m. Program and open house will be at 11 a.m., and a free lunch will be served for all veterans at noon.

Girard observance
GIRARD — Veterans Day program will be presented at 10 a.m. in the Girard High School auditorium.

All veterans are invited to breakfast at 9 a.m. in the GHS cafeteria.

Arma Veterans Day
ARMA — Lon Helm American Legion Post will present the traditional Veterans Day program at 10 a.m. at Northeast High School, Arma.

Northeast Junior High vocal music students will present musical selections, and a play titled “A Christmas Truce,” based on an incident in World War I, will be performed by the American history and English II classes.

Girard Christian Women
GIRARD — Girard Christian Women United will have their November luncheon and program at noon at the First Christian Church, Girard.
Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish.

Guest speaker will be Nikki Webster, Pittsburg, who will present a program titled “Reflections of a Military Wife” in keeping with the Veterans Day theme.

Senior Citizens canceled
Pittsburg Senior Citizens will not meet because of the Veterans Day holiday. Next meeting will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 18.

Anyone needing additional information may call the Pittsburg Parks and Recreation Department at 231-8310.

Legion bingo
Pittsburg American Legion Post 64 will host bingo, open to the public, at the post home, 2815 N. Joplin. The event is non-smoking.

Doors will open at 5 p.m., and card sales will begin at 5:30 p.m. Early bird game will start at 6:20 p.m., followed by regular bingo at 6:30 p.m. Jackpot is now 58 numbers for $300.

Storm chasers visit
Emmy Award-winning storm chasers Jeff and Kathryn Piotrowski will be at the Pittsburg Hastings store from noon to 8 p.m. to autograph purchases of their DVD “Storm Chasing the Joplin EF5: Miraculous Stories of Selfless Courage and Survival.”

The  Piotrowskis  will also be at the Pittsburg State University/Missouri Southern State University football game Saturday, before, during and after the 2 p.m. game.

Copies of their DVD will be available at the front gate and all six concession stands and they will be available to autograph purchases.
