CARTHAGE, Mo. — Times were tough for Pittsburg Post 64 on the first day of play Thursday in the Carthage-Roper American Legion Baseball Tournament.
Carl Junction handed Post 64 a 4-0 loss in the first game of the day and the Joplin Miners defeated Post 64 5-0.
Thursday morning rain created a delay for the first pitch of the opening game between Post 64 and Carl Junction.
Post 64 head coach Mike Watt said that despite not scoring a run over 14 innings, Post 64 hit the ball and hit the ball well but in the wrong spots.
For example, Watt said that Carl Junction center fielder Payton Walker (Missouri Southern) seemed to be everywhere, helping Post 64 total only three hits against Carl Junction pitcher Chase Marrs (Pittsburg State).
Strangely enough, Carl Junction totaled only two hits, both from Marrs.
Post 64 first baseman Cody Grilz enjoyed a solid game for Post 64, recording two doubles.
Despite a workmanlike performance by Post 64 starter Nick George against Joplin, three errors proved costly for Post 64 in a game probably a little closer than a 5-0 score.
Joplin starter Tristan Ash surrendered only six hits, all singles.
Carl Junction defeated Joplin 3-0 on Thursday with a no-hitter thrown by Walker, proving that hitting was definitely not contagious in Carthage, at least against Carl Junction on Thursday.
Post 64 dropped to 11-5 overall and 7-2 against teams from Missouri.
