After finishing second during its season-opening tourney on Tuesday, Girard won its first golf tournament of the year Thursday with a 365 score in the Caney Invitational, 49 strokes better than host Caney Valley.
Timbrelee McNair won her first individual tournament of the season with a consistent round of 80 (40-40), three shots better than Anna Pool of Coffeyville. Trinadie Puckett finished third (42-49—91), Jordan Ivey sixth (47-49—96), Carly Heatherly eighth (51-47—98) and Ashley Horton tied for 11th (53-50—103), as Girard simply outflanked the field with top 11 finishes. Ashley Johnson finished 23rd (60-59—119).

The Pittsburg girls finished second at the LCHS Invitational on Thursday, propelled by two first-place finishes — Katy Short in No. 1 singles and Emily Baden-Laikyn Long in No. 2 doubles.
“Katy Short was absolutely magnificent on this day and our No. 2 doubles (Baden-Long) came through some tough matches and some tough points,” Pittsburg head coach John Seal said. “I was very proud of these two young ladies. We’re getting better. Our No. 1 doubles (Katie Phalen-McKayla Pichler) played tough. Olivia Laidler gave me everything she had in No. 2 singles. Next week, we’re at Independence and man, we just keep getting better.”
Short defeated Fort Scott 8-0 (injury default), Labette County 8-4, Coffeyville 8-1 and Chanute 8-2.
Laidler beat Coffeyville 8-1 and lost to Fort Scott 8-0, Labette County 8-4 and Chanute 8-2.
Katie Phalen-McKayla Pichler won against Coffeyville 8-1 and Labette County 8-1 but lost 8-0 to both Fort Scott and Chanute.
Baden-Long beat Fort Scott 8-6, Coffeyville 8-0, Chanute 8-3 and Labette County 8-0.
Pittsburg moves its overall record to 3-3-2 on the season.
