Pittsburg senior Brittany Wilde made a little history Thursday night in No. 2 singles on the court of one of the toughest Kansas tennis programs.
Wilde became the first PHS player to ever win an individual championship in the Independence tournament and she defeated Iola 8-0, Chanute 8-3, Independence 8-5 and Fort Scott 8-2.
“Brittany Wilde, I can’t say enough about the way that she played,” Pittsburg head tennis coach John Seal said. “She played great. We really had a great outing by her.”
Katy Short finished third in No. 1 singles with 8-1 and 8-4 wins respectively over Iola and Chanute against 8-0 and 8-6 losses to Independence and Fort Scott, respectively.
Seal rotated Katie Phalen, Jessica Curlee and McKayla Pichler in No. 1 doubles and Pittsburg lost 8-0 to Fort Scott, 8-1 to Independence and 8-1 to Chanute with only a 8-5 score against Iola giving Pittsburg a mark in the win column.
Laikyn Long-Emily Baden split their four matches in No. 2 doubles — wins over Iola 8-2 and Chanute 8-6, and 8-1 losses to both Independence and Fort Scott.
“Katy Short really came through,” Seal said. “Laikyn Long and Emily Baden played well in No. 2 doubles. Phalen, Curlee and Pichler had their moments in No. 1 doubles and we’ll get better.”
Team results: Independence 14, Fort Scott 10, Pittsburg 9, Chanute 8, Iola 0.
Pittsburg records against each school: Iola 4-0, Chanute 3-1, Independence 1-3, Fort Scott 1-3.
