Ten GHS football players were recently honored with postseason awards. They include Kevin Rowe, junior; Jalen Merrell, senior; Nathan George, senior; Taylor Lewis, junior; Devin Vail, junior; Anthony Scholes, senior; Brayden Johnson, junior; Trenton Stolte, senior; Nicholas George, senior; and Tyler Gray, senior. Head Coach Leon Miller was named CNC Coach of the Year after leading the team to an undefeated CNC championship.

Ten GHS football players and Head Coach Leon Miller were recently honored with postseason awards.

Coach Miller was named CNC Coach of the Year after leading the team to their first league title since 1999, their first win over Colgan since 1999, and their first playoff victory since 2006.

Girard (9-2) finished with the top overall record in the CNC.

Senior Anthony Scholes received numerous postseason honors on offense and defense.

His offensive honors include Honorable Mention All-State 4A Wichita Eagle running back, 1st Team All-State 4A Kansas Football Coaches Association running back, 1st Team All-State 4A Topeka-Capital Journal running back, All-CNC Unanimous 1st Team running back, All-County Team running back, GHS Offensive Player of the Year, and GHS Most Valuable Player.

On defense, Scholes was selected as Honorable Mention All-State 4A Wichita Eagle defensive back.

“It is a great honor to be able to receive any award and also just awesome to see all of your hard work over the years pay off. None of my accomplishments could have occurred without my teammates,” Scholes said.

Senior Jalen Merrell also received numerous offensive and defensive awards.

His defensive honors include 1st Team All-State 4A Kansas Football Coaches Association defensive lineman, Honorable Mention All-State 4A Wichita Eagle defensive lineman, Honorable Mention All-State 4A Topeka-Capital Journal lineman, All-CNC Unanimous 1st Team defensive lineman, All-County Team defensive lineman, GHS Lineman of the Year, and GHS Defensive Player of the Year.

Merrell’s offensive honors include Honorable Mention All-State 4A Wichita Eagle offensive lineman and All-CNC 1st Team offensive lineman.

“I just feel thankful for all the accomplishments we received as a team this year. We all played hard and as a brotherhood. I am extremely honored to have received the awards I did as an individual, but my team was the sole reason I achieved anything this year,” Merrell said.

Senior Nathan George received All-CNC Unanimous 1st Team linebacker and All-County team linebacker while senior Trenton Stolte received All-CNC Honorable Mention tight end, All-County Team tight end, and GHS Special Teams Player of the Year.

Senior Tyler Gray received All-CNC 2nd Team defensive back while senior Nicholas George received All-CNC Honorable Mention on defense.

Junior Kevin Rowe received All-CNC 1st Team offensive lineman and All-County Team offensive lineman while junior Devin Vail received All-CNC 2nd Team wide receiver and All-CNC 2nd Team defensive lineman.

Junior Taylor Lewis received All-CNC 2nd Team running back while junior Brayden Johnson received All-CNC 2nd Team defensive back.

“Our coaching staff and players did a great job throughout the season, and I’m proud of the fact the rest of the coaches in the CNC League respected what we have done and voted me Coach of the Year,” Coach Miller said.
