Don’t bother trying to pick out what’s the best part of the Pittsburg Community Theatre production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
It’s all golden.
The classic Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera will be presented at 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium.
Very loosely based on the Gospel account of the last week in the life of Jesus, the show stars Linden Little in the title role. Since he’s a local theater veteran since childhood, it’s not surprising he that nails the drama, but this show also gives Little a chance to display strong vocal skills, including some pretty amazing high notes.
Much of the show focuses on the conflict between Jesus and Judas Iscariot, as well as the conflict Judas has within himself. Brock Goben is gripping as the unwilling betrayer who is wracked by regret.
Anna Warring is also a show-stopper as Mary Magdalene, the woman who has known too many men, but meets one who is totally different from anyone else she has ever seen. She’s blessed with one of the best-known songs in the show, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and does it full justice.
Jason Huffman is director, and also designed the sound and set. Little also designed the lights. In more doubling, we have Austin Curtright, a totally repellent, jeering King Herod, also serving as master carpenter, while Jon Eastman, who plays the high priest Caiphas as lead carpenter.
Also in the cast are Seth Harley as Annas, James Ryals outstanding as the Pilate, Lori Stotler as Simon the Zealot, A.J. Beu as Peter and Eric Davis, Kelly Smith, Erin O’Dell and Kimberly Arzoian.
Kaye Lewis, artistic director of the Midwest Regional Ballet, is choreographer for the show and is most likely responsible for the use of silks in the crucifixion scene. The image is unique and striking.
Lewis is also one of the tormentors, along with Hanna Wade, Megan Villamaria and Michelle Rhoades.
Also on stage are Mary Jo Harper, Lisa Quinteros, Kristina Parsons, John Mazurek, Jacob Hacker, Austin VanBecelaere, Katie Nance, Logan Falletti, Sienna Paoni, Parker Leas, Xavier Huffman, Cassie Hurt-McLarty, Betty Noonoo, Abbi Epperson, Morgan Grotheer, Jared Mazurek and Josh Velaquez.
Costumes were created by Lisa Quinteros, Kaye Lewis and Michelle Rhoades.
There are some controversial aspects to this show, while others will find it an inspiring and exhilarating experience.
Tickets may be purchased by calling 231-7827, online at www.MemorialAuditorium.org or at the door prior to the performance.
