PITTSBURG —
Three homes in Pittsburg were damaged by a fire early Thursday morning.
The Pittsburg Fire Department received a call at 6:30 a.m. about a fire at 807 E. 8th St. By 6:32 a.m., crews were on the scene.
Pittsburg Fire Chief Scott Crain said the house was fully engulfed quickly, with flames reaching as high as 50 feet. By 8 a.m., the house had burned to the ground, with heavy damage to the garage as well.
Because of the intensity of the fire, first responders went to adjacent houses and alerted the residents. The home at 805 E. 8th St. was heavily damaged because of the nearby blaze and was so hot that firefighters could not touch the front door. Instead, they had to kick in a door to get to the family inside, evacuating one adult and three “very sleepy” children, Crain said.
Another house, at 811 E. 8th St., had its siding warped by the heat as well.
The homeowner of 807 E. 8th, the start of the fire, has not been reached by the Pittsburg Fire Department at this time.
Crain said that he could not say what the cause of the blaze was at this time, but that the fire is under investigation and would be investigated by the Kansas Fire Marshal’s Office.
