The Girard City Council met Monday night with senior council member Sharon Mattson acting as mayor in the absence of mayor Maurice Harley.

Primary business of the evening was the opening of  engineering services proposals for the KLINK project. Council members turned proposals from Professional Engineering Consultants, Pittsburg, and Allgeier-Martin and Associates over to city administrator Gary Emry for evaluation.

A third packet received from Schwab Eaton, Wichita, seemed to be incomplete.

“I think there may have been a misunderstanding, because it appears that they’ve just given you their qualifications,” said Richard Loffswold, city attorney.

Emry said he would report back to the council in a few weeks.

He also informed the council that the city’s backhoe is down. It is now at a tractor company in Wichita for repairs.

“We had thought the cost of repairs would be in the range of $5,000, but they’ve told us that it will probably be more in the range of $3,500,” Emry said.

The council authorized him to pay up to $5,000 for the repairs, and also approved his request to schedule the city’s annual leaf pick-up for Dec. 3 and 4.

“That will be a Monday and Tuesday, which will give Girard citizens a weekend to rake up their leaves,” Emry said.

Mattson asked Emry when work would resume on the Girard Senior Center renovation project.

“We had pulled people off today to work on the cemetery building, but we’ll get back to the center,” Emry said. “On Wednesday I’ll assign two and maybe three more people to work on the center.”

Mattson said that director Myrna Hershberger had the center rented for several Christmas gatherings and was concerned that work would not be done  in time.
“If all the work isn’t done by then, we’ll move things out of the way,” Emry said.
