Raider girls, Panther boys take second at Regionals

RICHMOND — The Frontenac girls and the Colgan boys each finished second at the Class 3A regional track meet hosted by Central Heights High School, sending multiple athletes to the big meet next weekend in Wichita.

Frontenac junior Paige Badart won a regional title in the discus with a mark of 106 feet, 2 inches and finished third in the shot put (32-11.75). Kinsella Brunetti placed third in the 100-meter dash (13.25 seconds) and second in the 200 (27.74), qualifying for Wichita in both events.

Andi Palumbo will join Brunetti in the 100, as she placed fourth in the 100 (13.41) on Friday. Taylor Jameson took second in the 3200 (13:07.24). Meghan Winden finished third in the 100 hurdles (16.69) and third in the long jump (15-8). Alexis Robinson finished third in the high jump (4-10). Freshman Allyn Murray took fourth in the javelin (111-3), earning a state berth in her first year of high school.

Frontenac placed third in the 4x100 (54.19) with Brunetti, Palumbo, Katie Hastings and Winden.

Colgan sophomore Moira Myers finished second behind Riverton powerhouse Mackenzie Dunbar in the 800 (2:41.75). Freshman Cori Koehn will be Wichita bound after her fourth-place finish in the 400 (1:06.82).

Colgan finished runner-up in the 4x400 (4:22.16) with Koehn, Myers, Aliee Story and Nichole Kolarik and won its only girls regional title of the night in the 4x800 (10:46.36) behind the powerful legs of Kolarik, Koehn, Rachel Farmer and Myers.

Southeast senior Kayla Yancey qualified for state in four events: 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump and triple jump. Yancey won a regional title in the long jump with a leap of 15-10. She finished second in the triple jump (33-1), second in the 300 hurdles (51.32) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.05).

On the boys side, a distance runner and a hurdles specialist won a pair of regional titles for Colgan.

Jonny Adamson won both the 1600 (4:49.81) and the 3200 (10:24.23), finishing ahead of Riverton senior Tyler Schultz in both races.

Casey Steinmiller, a senior extending his prep career one more week, won the 110 hurdles (15.55) and the 300 hurdles (40.76), outracing the likes of Christian Murphy of Erie and Hunter Thuro of Wellsville.

Colgan sprinter Derek Beck finished second in the 100 (10.90) and fourth in the 400 (52.36). Freshman speedster Austin Commons took fourth in the 200 (24.00). The 4x400 team of Aaron Gouvion, Derek Beck, Garrett Kays and Alex Gilmore came in third with a time of 3:38.39.

Freshman Ian Duncan finished second in the high jump (5-8) and junior Conner Dayton placed third in the long jump (21-4).

Frontenac senior Hunter Mulherin and junior Taylor Johnson qualified for state in the pole vault with respective second-place (12-0) and fourth-place (12-0) finishes.
