Some Frontenac youngsters are using a time-honored fund raiser to help the poor animals at the SEK Humane Society.

Nine-year-old Ali Rosebrough, her brother, Zach, 12, and her friend, Zoie Baker, 9, have been selling lemonade at 218 W. McKay since Tuesday to raise funds to donate to the shelter. As of noon on Thursday the friends had made close to $150 to put toward food, leashes, collars and toys, among others essentials, and they’ll be hard at work again today until noon, when they’ll present the proceeds to the shelter in person. They got the idea from a friend, who sold lemonade and Oreo cookies, and who had raised $80 for the shelter.

“We wanted to raise money for charity, and I said it’s a good idea because the animals deserve our help,” Ali said. “Some of the animals got abused and they need a lot of money. Some of the money is for leashes so they can go on walks, too.”

Zoie agreed.

“They don’t want to be stuck in cages all day,” she said, matter-of-factly.

If the venture sounds just a little familiar, it’s because the Rosebrough kids were involved in another fundraiser last year; they created the Ace Animal Club and hosted a carwash in the lot next to Pallucca’s. This year Zoie decided to participate as well.

They offer pink and berry lemonade, water and iced tea, and business, though slow at times, was fairly good. Madisyn Hite, 12, and her brother, 7-year-old Colin, stopped by after they saw the stand while driving by earlier with their parent.

“It’s hot outside and it’s for the animal shelter,” Hite said.

Jason Newcomb, owner of Jason’s Tree Service, stopped by with two members of his crew for a cup of cool drink.

“Whenever I see kids with stands like this I always try to stop and help them out,” Newcomb said. “The kids just like that.”

One of Newcomb’s crew members, Joseph Vilmer, said he was impressed they were putting up with the heat to raise money for charity.

“We use to do that all the time when I was growing up,” Vilmer said. “But that’s something you don’t see much anymore.”
