A total of 27 gathered July 4 in the rural Fort Scott home of Mark and Haley Shead, Katy and Benjamin, for an evening cookout with side dishes and desserts carried in. Fireworks were on display at dark at neighboring homes, and those attending also saw the Fort Scott fireworks show. Guests of the Sheads that evening were Lavaine, Tami, Tobia, Midala and Mariah Murphy; David, Amy, Haley and Hannah Sachau; Charles Corporon, Rose Campbell, Shirley Applegarth, Mary V. Shead, Vickie, Larry, Ralph and Cindy Shead, along with Chris and Nick Nickerson and Will, April, Billy and McKayla Lapp.
A recent Pittsburg Morning Sun article told of Alma Bork celebrating her 103rd birthday. Her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Jerry Bork, was quoted frequently in the story. The former Marilou Garton, she grew up in Arcadia and graduated from Arcadia High School.
Thomas Watt and Delton Watt Jr., Kansas City, and brother Allen Watt, with wife Linda and Douglas, Wichita, visited mother Mae Watt over the weekend. They had Sunday dinner together in Fort Scott.
New people working recently in the Arcadia Post Office are Kaitlyn Dutton, newcomer to Arcadia, post master relief, and Bill Galloway, rural route carrier from Girard, who was on duty two days last week.
Richard Culbertson has resigned from the Arcadia City Council because of poor health. He has been replaced by Brandy Trammell, who was sworn in at the June meeting.
JOY Sunday School Class met June 18 with 10 present for the carry-in dinner and business meeting. Patty Peterson, president, conducted the meeting. Vera Parrish, secretary, read the minutes of the May meeting and also read some humorous stories near the close of the meeting. A church board meeting was conducted by Wayne Parrish. Next meeting will be a dinner and business session July 16 in the Arcadia Christian Church bungalow.
Forrest and Ernestine Berkey spent July 4 in the rural Pittsburg home of her daughter, Angela Redd, and family. A cookout was held to celebrate Redd’s birthday. Present were her two daughters, Kristen and Bethany Redd and Nathan Scheiner. They were able to view the Pittsburg fireworks display from the house. On July 6 Ernestine Berkey was a guest in the home of Roger and Ionia Phillips, Liberal, Mo., for a fish fry. Fifty people were present to watch fireworks later that evening. Forrest Berkey was unable to attend because of his work schedule.
The Arcadia Christian Church congregation welcomed Pastor Charles and Willa Cable back from their California trip on July 8. Before sermon time, the pastor and his son, Bob Cable, Lamar, Mo., sat at the piano, both playing a duet and singing a special song. Following that was a solo by Landon Younge with Bob Cable also serving as accompanist.
Ralph and Cindy Shead brought dinner Saturday evening to the Arcadia home of his mother, Mary V. Shead, and spent the night there. On Sunday morning they drove to Hume, Mo., where he was preacher for the day. That afternoon they visited Larry and Vickie Shead, rural Garland, and in the evening the four attended a reception at the Fort Scott Community Christian Church in honor of the pastor and his wife.
