WINONA, Minn. — Members of the Japan Karate-do Genbu-Kai of Pittsburg traveled to and participated in the Minnesota Genbu-Kai Tournament and Seminars on July 6-8.

Seminars included kata, kobudo, batto and karate-do with participants and competitors from California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Minnesota. The Minnesota Genbu-Kai has been teaching in Minnesota since 1972.

Pittsburg results: Trevor McCorkle — first in 11-12 beginning kumite; Banning Stuckey — first in men’s beginning kata, second in men’s beginning kumite; Aaron May — first in adult advanced kobudo kata; Amy Murray — first in women’s black belt kumite, second in women’s black belt kata. Bryan Crismas, Murray and Donald Stephens worked as officials and instructors.

How were temperatures up north in Minnesota? Temperatures in Winona reached a high of 90 degrees on July 8.

Winona — located in the southeast corner of the state along the Mississippi River — has a population of 27,592 (not much larger than Pittsburg) and developed a reputation as the stained glass capital of the United States.

The city was named after Princess Wenonah, who — according to disputed legend — chose to jump to her death from Maiden Rock rather than live a life without love after her father made her marry somebody else and not the man that she loved. Famous explorer Zebulon Pike wrote one of the earliest accounts in 1805.
