FORT SCOTT — Fort Scott Community College has announced the hiring of Kristin Schalk as the Greyhounds’ new head softball coach.

Schalk comes to Fort Scott after spending the 2011 and 2012 seasons as the assistant coach at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas.

“I am very excited about the hiring of Coach Schalk,” stated J.D. Ettore, FSCC athletic director. “It was evident to everyone on the hiring committee that her skill set as a coach, combined with her leadership qualities, was a great match for Greyhound Athletics and FSCC.”

Schalk specialized in outfield and hitting instruction at Ottawa, as well as left-handed slapping, base coaching, strength and conditioning, recruiting, and special event planning. During that time, Schalk helped the Braves reach a 2011 regular season Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, as well as producing 17 All-Conference performers.

“I am very fortunate to be joining such a great institution as Fort Scott Community College," Schalk said. “To be part of a college where academics, community service and athletics are of such high importance is a great opportunity. I am very excited to begin the year at the helm of the Lady Greyhound softball program.”

The Greyhounds have lost 54 consecutive games, a losing skid which includes a 0-47 mark in 2012, the worst record in school history. Former coach Malinda Berglund went 28-107 during her tenure.

Prior to Ottawa University, Schalk began her coaching career as the assistant coach for the Central Ohio Lady Rebels 16U club softball team and the Mercyhurst Preparatory High School softball team. As an assistant coach, her primary focus was outfield, middle infield and hitting instruction. Schalk also served as an assistant coach for the Gannon University men’s wrestling team in 2009, producing a conference champion, six national qualifiers and five All-Americans.

Schalk played four years at NCAA Division II Gannon University in Erie, Pa. During her career as a Golden Knight, she served as an outfielder and designated player.
She led the team in grand slams her sophomore year and posted a career-high .390 on-base percentage during her senior season while also leading the team in doubles.

The Golden Knights earned a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship as well as a regional qualification during her tenure. Schalk earned her bachelor’s degree in Sports and Exercise Science with a minor in coaching in 2010.

In 2012, Schalk graduated from Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y., with a master’s degree in Sports Administration. She is a native of Pataskala, Ohio.
