BAXTER SPRINGS — The Girard 11-12 All-Stars advanced to the semifinals of the Kansas State Little League Tournament with a 10-4 win Tuesday night.

Pitching and timely hitting proved to be the advantages for Girard.

Starting pitcher Ethan Goff allowed two runs over 4.1 innings and Girard pushed across at least one run in five of the six innings. Goff left to a nice ovation in the fifth after reaching 79 pitches on the night.

Girard third base coach Bob Hawkins exhorted the players all game with phrases like “That’s why we get three swings in baseball . . . use them,” “Nobody can help you but you,” “Let’s cut a ball in half,” “What are you waiting on? If you waited any longer, he would’ve caught it” and “Hit me a ball off the back foot one time.”

In the third, line-drive hitting Dakota Lopez started the frame with a line-drive double, moved to third on a single by Ryan Hughes and scored on a RBI single by Ethan Jahay. Jahay would later score on a single by Colton Barnaby.

In the fourth, Camden McFarland singled and then scored on a Lopez double.

In the sixth, desperately needing insurance runs, Girard came through with three runs on five consecutive hits facing its final out.

Hughes started this critical rally with a single against Galena reliever Garrett Hall, then came a RBI double by Jahay, a RBI single by Wade Boatman, a single by Ty Norris and a RBI single by Cody Mein against reliever Blake Green.

Mein, who pinch ran for Jahay and scored on the Boatman single, pulled off the nifty feat of scoring a run as a pinch runner, then driving in a run during his normal turn at-bat in the same inning.

Galena scored its first run in the second — Hall reached on an error and later scored on a Braydon Roberts groundout. Hall and Kooper Lawson hit RBI singles in the three-run fifth for Galena.

Girard moves into the semifinals and Galena falls into the losers’ bracket. Girard will play the winner of Frontenac-Baxter Springs in the late game Thursday night and Galena will play the loser in the early game Thursday.

On Monday night, the Frontenac 9-10 All-Stars defeated Galena 6-1. Ryan Raio earned the win and helped out his own cause with a double. Nate Burdette hit a pair of doubles and Skyler Campiti added a double.

Frontenac plays Riverton in the winners’ bracket tonight; Girard and Galena face off in the early game with one team facing elimination.
