The Columbia Angels White (based in Texas) finished the first day of play Wednesday at the head of Pool C with a 2-0 mark, beating Albuquerque Baseball Academy 5-2 and Waco Storm 12-7 at JayCee Ballpark.

Against the Storm, the Angels overcame an early 2-0 deficit and finally overpowered their opponent, forcing Storm head coach Mark Winkler from the friendly confines of the dugout to bring in three relief pitchers.

The Storm held the Angels scoreless for the first two frames, highlighted by Storm catcher Jason Prevatt throwing out both Will Vest and Ryan Olive on back-to-back stolen base attempts in the first inning, negative any possible momentum and offensive surge.

However, the Angels delivered several big hits — a RBI single by Nick Zarosky and a two-run single by Zane Gardner in the third, a RBI double by Cade Killingsworth in the fifth, a three-run double by Tim Burr and a RBI single by Killingsworth in the sixth and a RBI single by Burr in the seventh.

Burr led the Angels with four RBI. Killingsworth, Gardner and Zarosky each drove in two.

Meanwhile, the Storm received a good ballgame offensively from Mason George, who hit 3-for-4 with three singles and three RBI. Cameron Cooper stole a pair of bases and made a great diving catch in the right center gap on a sacrifice fly by Zarosky. This catch helped the Storm get out of the fifth quicker after consecutive hits from Burr and Killingsworth — Killingsworth smashed a ricochet double off the Wilbert & Towner Attorneys at Law sign.

Angel pitchers Joe Taylor, Dallas Johnson and Cole Butler combined on a six-hitter — the Storm collected five of its hits in the first and fifth innings.

The Angels and the Storm play this afternoon in Joplin at Wendell Redden Stadium — the Waco Storm and the Albuquerque Baseball Academy at 3 and the Columbia Angels White and Building Champions Navy at 5.
