Two area TOPS members were recently recognized for their successful weight loss during 2011.
Kansas State TOPS Recognition Days were held at the end of April in Topeka.
Treva Williams, Girard, a member of Girard TOPS #0975, won first place in Women’s Division 2. She lost 81.50 pounds and is continuing to lose. She reported that she is now 15.50 pounds from her goal weight.
“She’s doing very well and getting close to her goal,” said Margaret Pierce, TOPS area captain.
Patrick Orr, Pittsburg, lost 16.25 pounds and won second place in Men’s Division 2.
His wife, Mary, had first joined Pittsburg Chapter TOPS KS #0599 with co-workers at Via Christi Home Health. However, her husband resisted.
“My excuse was there were no other men,” Orr said. “My wife conspired with other nurses in her office to get their husbands to join, too. End of excuse.”
TOPS members are weighed at weekly meeting designed to reinforce healthy habits, such as setting reasonable goals, increasing physical activity, portion control and food journaling. The TOPS program includes a six-week “quick-start” guide, “My Day One,” and a one-year subscription to “TOPS News,” the organization’s members-only magazine.
A study published in “Obesity” found that TOPS participants lost between 5.9 percent and 7.1 percent of their initial weight.
TOPS is a nonprofit organization, and the national membership fee is $28 per year. Chapter fees, usually ranging from $2 to $5 per month, are collected for local chapter expenses. There are no special foods to purchase.
“Components that help make TOPS successful are the camaraderie, the support and recognition of its members,” Pierce said.
Anyone wishing to learn more about TOPS or find a local chapter may call 620-235-1790, 316-755-1055 or log onto www.tops.org.
