GIRARD — The annual task of hammering out a budget for the upcoming year was on the minds of Crawford County Commissioners during their Tuesday meeting.

Commissioner Carl Wood asked county clerk Don Pyle if budget requests were coming in for commissioners to study.

“We’ve been getting some, and we’ll get out word that we need to have the rest turned in,” Pyle said. “By next Friday we should have something for you to look at.”

Commissioner Bob Kmiec asked Pyle if he thought the requests would be over those from last year.

“Most that I’ve seen so far are in line with last year,” Pyle said.

Kmiec also asked if there had been any meetings on insurance for county employees.

“We met with the Blue Cross representative, and they thought our claims next year would be 3 or 4 percent up from this year,” Pyle said. “But that’s their estimated.”

The county clerk noted that the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court ruling on proposed changes in health care could have an impact on insurance.

He added that the county has had a good year as far as employee compensation is concerned.

“We’ve had nicks and scrapes, but you always have those,” Pyle said. “We haven’t had any big things. Also, our lease-purchase expenditures have been down because we’re buying less on time.”

In other business, the commission granted a one-day waiver of its cereal malt beverage license to Dalton’s for July 7.

The commission will meet again at 10 a.m. Friday, but whether the July 3 meeting will be held is uncertain.

“If we have some budget figures by then to look at, we’ll meet, but it looks like we might not,” Kmiec said.
