It was one of those critical plays in a baseball game where momentum shifts in an instant from one team to its opponent and we see two contradictory games contained within the same baseball game.

In the bottom of the third, with two outs, CP Communications Reds hitter James Berryman connected with a Ben Brinegar offering. Berryman knocked it over the head of John’s Sports Center Giants center fielder Benny Titterington, scoring Jake Beckman and Caleb Hemby all the way from first. Berryman went for a triple and the Giants recovered and threw out Berryman at third, ending the inning with the Reds ahead 5-2, seemingly in control.

However, the Giants broke open the contest in the next half-inning with a six-run tally and the Reds went scoreless the next three innings as the Giants advanced to the Ted Carnino League semifinals with a 9-5 win.

“Great job tonight,” Giants head coach Eddie Lomshek told his players in their customary postgame huddle. “For the most part, we threw strikes and we made them hit the ball. When they did, we made more routine plays than we have all year. Reece (Schulz) caught a couple pop-ups at third and threw out a runner at first. Benny (Titterington) had a putout from second at first. Outfield, last inning, great job Will (Esposito) and Ethan (Dellasega), just those little things.”

In the big fourth inning, Will Esposito led off with a single and during Esposito’s second at-bat of the frame, Brinegar scored on a wild pitch for the sixth run and 8-5 lead. Kage Hunt singled home Esposito, then came four straight runs without a hit out of the infield or an out, for that matter, as the Giants sent up seven consecutive batters without recording an out.

Brandon Petty added a RBI single in the sixth to put the Giants ahead 9-5.

Brinegar retired the Reds 1-2-3 in the fourth and fifth innings, then the Reds made the Giants sweat in the sixth after starter Petty returned to the hill.

With two outs, Beckman and Hemby rapped back-to-back singles and the always dangerous Reds had the middle of its lineup coming up. Petty, however, induced Berryman into a grounder up the middle and shortstop Andrew Lomshek made one of those routine plays Coach Lomshek talked about, forcing out the runner at second and ending the game.

The Giants (6-7) lost twice in the regular season to the Reds by identical 11-4 scores. Now, the Giants are guaranteed at least fourth place and face the Wells Fargo White Sox (9-4) in the semifinals tonight.
