Jesse Newcomb and William Mitchelson, 2012 graduates of St. Mary’s Colgan High School, have been recognized by the Sunflower Chapter of the National Football Foundation as two of 13 Scholar-Athletes for the state of Kansas.

They were honored June 13 at the foundation’s 19th annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet at the Anderson Football Complex, University of Kansas.

Chuck Smith, SMC head football coach, nominated the young men for the award and he was also a special guest at the banquet.

The National Football Foundation’s goal is “Building Leaders Through Football,” and the evening’s program focused on recognizing the academic, athletic and co-curricular accomplishments of these scholar-athletes.

Keynote speaker was Coach Clint Brown, KU special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach. He encouraged the young men to continue to work hard in college, to remember the life lessons learned through football, and to be proud of this outstanding honor.

Each scholar-athlete received an engraved plaque to commemorate this award. Other high schools having students selected 2012 Kansas Scholar -Athletes are Salina Central, Basehor-Linwood, Centralia, Council Grove, Hutchinson, Lawrence, Holton, Eudora, Beloit and Bishop Carroll in Wichita. St. Mary’s Colgan High School is one of only two schools in the state with two scholar-athletes selected this year.

Both Newcomb and Mitchelson were recognized earlier this year as Kansas Honor Scholars by the University of Kansas.

Newcomb is the son of Terry and Mary Jo Newcomb, and was also the recipient earlier of an Elks Scholarship from Pittsburg Elks Lodge 412. He plans to be a pre-medicine major this fall at the University of Kansas.

Mitchelson is the son of Kevin and Frances Mitchelson, and was also designated as a Governor’s Scholar. He will attend New York University in the Business and Political Economy Program at the Stern School of Business.
