Pittsburg Post 64 defeated the Neosho Wildcats 9-0 and the Mount Vernon 39’ers 8-0 on Sunday during the final day of the Pittsburg Legion/Fort Scott Community College Classic at JayCee Ballpark.
Post 64 jumped ahead early on Neosho with a four-run first inning — Cody Grilz drove in two with a double and battery mates Christian Cedeno and Dylan Gromer each drove in first-inning runs.
Post 64 kept its foot on the accelerator with two runs in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Post 64 starter Cedeno picked up from where he left off in the season-opening Wood Bat Tournament, allowing no runs on two hits during four innings of work before Nate George came on in relief. Cedeno threw 22 pitches, 17 for strikes and tossed a first-pitch strike to 15 of 16 batters, proving himself on for a Sunday morning contest.
Sam Gilbert, Grilz and Matt Standlee each drove in two runs and Neosho did not help itself with three errors during a matchup of teams which played the previous Sunday in the championship game of the Wood Bat Tournament.
Post 64 (9-1) continued its offensive assault in the second game of the day with eight runs on 13 hits against Mount Vernon and Blake Vail pitched a complete game shutout, allowing his no runs on five hits. All told, Post 64 pitchers allowed only eight hits to Neosho and Mount Vernon over 10 innings.
