Houston Kyle Chapman defeated the Midwest Nationals Red 6-3, despite not scoring a run or collecting a hit after the second inning Friday evening at Al Ortolani Field on the campus of Pittsburg State University.

Nationals Red hitters themselves only managed five hits against Kyle Chapman pitchers John King and Nicholas Orewiler. King allowed three runs on three hits during his four innings and Orewiler benefited from a couple of sparkling defensive plays in the fifth and sixth innings — right fielder T.J. Scott turned a 9-5 double play in the fifth on a catch and assist and middle infielders Jordan Wood and C.J. Pickering turned a 6-4-3 DP in the sixth.

Early on, by the bottom of the second in fact, it looked as if Kyle Chapman would run-rule the Nationals Red. Anthony Reed and Quinn Atwood hit back-to-back singles, then following a force play and a throwing error which scored Reed, catcher Aaron Dodson and designated hitter Alex Dunlap knocked back-to-back RBI doubles to highlight a three-run second inning.

Both teams combined for five runs in the first inning — mostly on a combination of walks, hit batters and wild pitches. Nationals Red hitter Andrew Kendrick did register a RBI on a 4-3 groundout; Nick Hernandez drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Pickering hit a RBI single for Kyle Chapman.

After the bottom of the second, both teams combined for one run. Webb City High School player Duncan Fletcher hit a RBI double in the fourth, scoring Nationals Red teammate Austin Schweiss.

The Nationals Red feature other area high school products: Aaron Patton (Monett), Dalton Stafford (Carthage), Cade Harris (Carthage), J.D. Douglas (Diamond) and Colton Webber (Seneca).

Kyle Chapman and the Nationals Red played game No. 99 overall in the Premier Baseball Junior Championship. Both teams are in the championship pool of the 46-team field.
