EMPORIA — Hutchinson graduate and Pittsburg State recruit Ja’Mon Cotton helped clinch a 14-7 win in the 39th annual Kansas Shrine Bowl with his 9-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Cotton won Most Valuable Player for the West.

Cotton finished with 60 yards on 12 carries, averaging five yards a pop. He rumbled for over 2,000 yards (2,099 yards and 34 TDs) his senior year for head coach Randy Dreiling, helping the Salt Hawks earn a Class 5A state title.

Kapaun quarterback Phil Miller enjoyed a standard-setting inaugural Shrine Bowl in 1974 — 17 completed passes, 25 pass attempts, 256 yards and two passing TDs (tied with Stan Weber of Goddard, Matt Anderson of Great Bend and David Wiemers of Clay Center) in a 16-14 loss for the West.

On Saturday night, East quarterback Garrett Fugate (Blue Valley Northwest; Central Missouri) broke one Miller record with 32 attempts shattering the old mark that stood for nearly four decades. Fugate won MVP of the East with an overall evening of 16-32 passing for 204 yards and one TD, attempting 20 passes alone in the first half. Fugate added 19 yards on 15 carries.

The West and the East both scored their only touchdowns in the first half on long pass-and-catch plays.

On a third-down play — third and 18 from its own 46 — West quarterback Matt Reed (Wichita Heights; Oklahoma wrestling) connected with Collin Sexton (Abilene) and busted coverage helped Sexton break free and score a 54-yard touchdown for the first points of the game. Reed delivered a 2-point conversion pass to receiver Jordan Hart (McPherson). The West led 8-0 after one quarter.

One play after the West committed its second offside penalty on a punt, the East immediately took advantage of its new life. Fugate hit fellow quarterback Michael Glatczak (Centralia; Butler Community College) on a 5-yard slant and four dodged tacklers later, Glatczak added 50 yards for a 55-yard score. Nick Walsh (Lyndon; Kansas State) added the extra point and the East would trail 8-7 at halftime after knocking on the door late in the first half. Walsh had a 31-yard field goal attempt blocked on the last play.

Glatczak caught four passes for 79 yards and one TD in the first half. Against St. Mary’s Colgan in the Class 2-1A state playoffs last year, Glatczak broke a 92-yard TD run and tossed a pair of TD passes to lead Centralia to a 24-10 win at Hutchinson Field. Glatczak played both receiver and quarterback during high school and he played on state title teams in 2009 and 2011.

West quarterback Derrick Decker (Rose Hill) and running back Cotton offered a sneak preview of what could be two cogs in a future Pitt State backfield. Cotton, a late addition to the West roster, busted a 12-yard first down on his first carry and later added a 15-yard run before halftime.

Neither team scored a point in the third quarter.

The West, taking advantage of a 15-yard personal foul penalty on the East, knocked on the door first after halftime when quarterback Trent Stucky (Sedgwick) connected with receiver Kole Schankie (Madison; hometown Emporia State) on a 33-yard play down to the East 11. However, the West committed a couple 5-yard penalties and turned it over on downs at the East 21 with no points on the scoreboard.

The West came back knocking late in the third and early in the fourth quarter — sustaining a 67-yard scoring drive, culminated by the Cotton touchdown.
