Fire mostly destroyed a one story house at 506 E. 28th Street Wednesday afternoon.
Witnesses on the scene said the fire started around 2 p.m., and Pittsburg Fire Chief Scott Crain said the fire likely originated at the back of the house, but that he could not yet be sure.
“When we got here the deck was totally ablaze,” Crain said.
No one was inside the home during the blaze, Crain said, but there were three dogs in the residence. One of the dogs was killed in the fire, but two small dogs were retrieved from the part of the house that was farthest from the flames. Later, Crawford County EMS crews could be seen treating the dogs with oxygen as people gathered around to watch.
The home is owned by Larry Shanks, residence unknown, and rented by Stacy Still. Neither were available for comment.
Crain said 10 Pittsburg firefighters and three trucks responded to the fire. There also were elements of Crawford County EMS and the Pittsburg Police Department. Firefighters had cut a hole in the front roof and could be seen spraying water into the attic as flames leapt from the hole, as well as from the back of the house. Later piece of the ceiling could be seen falling to the floor through the open front door. A lone sports trophy still stood in one of the bedroom windows.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Crain said.
