MANHATTAN — Pittsburg Post 64 played 7 hours of baseball Saturday, beating Salina 13-12 in a 14-inning losers' bracket final classic lasting over 4 hours and losing 9-5 to Hays in the championship game of the Kansas American Legion Class AAA State Tournament.

Post 64 outfielder Nick George finished Salina with a walk-off triple in the bottom of the 14th, the only run scored from both teams during five complete innings of extra baseball.

Surely nobody expected 14 innings of baseball when Post 64 took a 12-4 lead into the seventh. However, resilient Salina plated three in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth to force extra innings. Post 64 went seven frames without a single run.

Brett Macary led a balanced Post 64 offense with three RBI and Sam Gilbert, Nate Grimaldi and Joe Wimmer each added two, as four Post 64 players combined for nine RBI. Grimaldi and Blake Vail collected doubles. Two of the fastest players on the field, Grimaldi and Wimmer, each stole three bases for a Post 64 team which outstole its opponent 8-0. Post 64 posted 18 hits, led by Grimaldi and Macary with three apiece.

One bad inning cost Post 64 in the championship game against Hays. Still, Post 64 overcame a six-run third inning by Hays and trailed 7-5 before Hays tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Not bad for a Post 64 squad which just finished a 14-inning contest against Salina.

Gilbert, the most consistent offensive player all summer for Post 64, collected two RBI and Bryce Burdette and Wimmer each picked up RBI. Bryan Wade reached on two walks and contributed a sacrifice.

Recent high school graduates and three-sport athletes Gilbert (St. Mary's Colgan), Dylan Gromer (Pittsburg) and Wimmer (Pittsburg) played their final games before moving onto college. Gilbert and Gromer both signed with area community colleges to continue their baseball careers, Gilbert with Fort Scott and Gromer with Independence, both schools in the Jayhawk Conference. Wimmer will attend Kansas State University.

Post 64 ends its season 32-14, its only two losses at state against Hays.
