GIRARD — The 4-H Horse Timed Events started the final day of events of the 2012 Crawford County Fair bright and early Saturday morning.

Members of the Lucky Riders 4-H Club participated in several different competitions before an epic end-of-competition water fight, a nice relief from temperatures beginning to rise early Saturday afternoon into the 90s.

Shayla Sjorlund, 18, was one of two Lucky Riders saluted on Saturday afternoon for being in her last year in 4-H. The other was Danielle Walsh, a 2011 graduate of Girard High School.

Sjorlund has been a 4-H member for 11 years, since she was 7. She rode Beau (9) on Saturday, her horse for the past six years.

“I like all the people and riding my horse,” Sjorlund said. “Everyone’s really nice. I would recommend 4-H to anyone. . . . I’ll just miss 4-H.”

Beau shares his name with one of the three horses John Wayne used during his later screen career. Beau worked in “True Grit,” that 1969 cowboy movie directed by Henry Hathaway which earned Wayne his first Academy Award for Best Actor.

Sjorlund called barrels her favorite event.

Hannah Fredericksen, 17, said that she’s only been in 4-H three years and retains two more years of eligibility since her birthday falls behind a Jan. 1 deadline. She’s been partnered with her horse Dolly (13) four years.

Fredericksen dolled up Dolly on Saturday, only fitting with a female horse.

“My favorite colors are green and blue,” Fredericksen said. “I think she (Dolly) looks good.”

Fredericksen also called barrels her favorite event.

“It’s fast,” Fredericksen said. “It requires you to think fast and you have to be able to react accordingly to whatever your horse does. It’s constant adjustment and it’s just fun.”

Fredericksen won two events Saturday — senior barrels (17.657 seconds) and senior flag (8.526) — and finished only two points behind Lily Zimmerman in the senior age division.

Abbie Stephan, 16, finished runner-up in the 2012 Crawford County Fair Rodeo Queen competition and she displayed her runner-up buckle Saturday. Stephan won Miss Congeniality in 2011.

Stephan joined 4-H when she was 7 and she rode her favorite horse, Jack (7), on Saturday. Like both Sjorlund and Fredericksen, Stephan stated a preference for barrel racing as her favorite event.

“It just takes time and practice,” Stephan said, “and to be very patient with your horse.”

Stephan said that she practices with Jack 1-2 hours per day.

“It’s been so hot that you have to get out in the morning or night to ride,” Stephan said.

Stephan was surrounded by friends and family Saturday — younger sisters Rachael (11) and Katy (7) and fellow Rodeo Queen candidate Rebecca Wright, 14, an incoming freshman at St. Paul High School. Wright took Miss Congeniality this year.

Katy Stephan and Wright both stated a preference for barrels and Rachael Stephan noted flags as her favorite event.

Wright rode Little Man (15), Katy Stephan rode Two Sock (no age on Two Sock) and Rachael Stephan rode Lou (7), friends with Jack.
