Girard Little League fell behind 9-0 early during its Monday afternoon game with DeSoto and despite scoring two runs in the third, two in the fourth, five in the fifth and two in the sixth, Girard could not overcome that early hole and dropped its third straight contest in the Midwest Regional Tournament, 18-11.
Girard scored its first two runs on a combination of hits, walks and wild pitches. Camden McFarland led off the frame with a single, then Cody Mein reached on a walk. Both runners would later score on wild pitches.
Mein picked up a pair of RBI in the third, when his two-out single plated Ty Norris and McFarland. Three errors in the inning helped Girard out. Mein reached Girard on one of the errors but could not be pushed across by his teammates.
Girard scored five in the fifth on the strength of a Norris RBI single, a McFarland RBI single, a Mein RBI single and a two-run single by Goff. Norris singled home Hughes and McFarland singled home Boatman in the sixth for the final runs of the game.
Four Girard players combined for all nine RBI — Mein a team-high three and Goff, McFarland and Norris each with two. After only two hits during its first game Saturday, Girard batters have accumulated 22 hits, both games 10-plus hit affairs for the Kansas state champions.
Aaron Perren led DeSoto with four RBI and Cody Schrader and Mayson DeRousse both had three.
Girard drops to 0-3 in the Midwest Regional and closes out round-robin play today against Nebraska state champs, Kearney. Kearney defeated Sioux City Westside 15-2 on Saturday and DeSoto 9-4 on Sunday.
Sioux City Westside 12, Girard 7: Girard catcher Ryan Hughes nearly kept his team in the game Sunday afternoon against Sioux City Westside.
Hughes went 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and a game-high five RBI. Hughes' single plated Colton Barnaby in the second, giving the Kansas state champions their first run of the day. In the fourth, Hughes drove in two with a triple to right field, scoring Barnaby and Wade Boatman; Hughes would later score on a wild pitch during a five-run inning. One inning later, Hughes delivered a two-run double, scoring Barnaby and Boatman. Barnaby scored three runs on Hughes hits.
His efforts, however, proved not enough as Sioux City Westside defeated Girard 12-7.
Ethan Goff went 4-4 for Girard, as Girard accumated 10 hits, eight more than Saturday against Robbinsdale.
Sioux City Westside slugger Jack Graves proved much too much for Girard, collecting four RBI on two hits, including a home run. Luke Johnson and Austin Carter each had three hits for Sioux City Westside.
