Pittsburg’s Mall 8 Theater in the Meadowbrook Mall should be projecting movies in an entirely digital format by the end of the month. Officials from ShowPlex Cinemas, the Overland Park - based company that owns the theaters, said work is ongoing to make the transition from 35 millimeter film projection to 100 percent digital cinema projection and upgraded sound across all eight screens this week.
According to a company release, improvements will include improved picture quality and the ability to show a variety of 3D movies and alternative programming such as concerts and live sporting events, which the theater has hosted in the past. The conversion will include the latest in digital movie technology, including Barco digital projectors, GDC digital cinema servers and an upgrade to 5.1 sound.
“The ability of today’s digital cinema technology to greatly improve the movie-going experience makes the film-to-digital conversion a top priority for our theatres,” Al Lane, CEO of ShowPlex Cinemas, said in the release — representatives were not available for comment as of press time. “Pittsburg is a tremendous movie-viewing community and we are excited to continue our theatre and technology enhancements and upgrades for our valued patrons at the Mall 8 Theatre.”
Theater-goers also can now earn points to receive free movies, popcorn and drinks through a new rewards program. Points are earned each time movie tickets or items at the concessions stand are purchased.
