The Pittsburg Fire Department awarded three area elementary school students for their artistic prowess Wednesday night at Fire State No. 1.

The students were awarded prizes for their top three finish in the departments first coloring book contest, which it held in October.

The contest was part of Fire Prevention Week, which took place Oct. 9 through 15. Kindergarten through third grade students from Meadowlark, Lakeside, Westside, George Nettels and St. Mary’s Elementary Schools picked out a singular scene from one of the hundreds of coloring books firefighters distributed when they visited the schools last month. More than 500 sent in entries.

“It’s the first one we’ve done,” Fire Chief Scott Crain said. “All of the city grade schools were represented.”

The prize for first place was a $50 savings bond. Second place won a fire extinguisher, and third place won a smoke detector.

The winners each said they were glad to be on top of the mountain when the judging dust had cleared. First place winner Emily Imhof said she worked especially hard on her entry.

“I feel really happy because I really wanted to win first place, and I really wanted that $50 savings bond,” the 7.5-year-old St. Mary’s Elementary second grader said. “It wasn’t really that hard.”

Second place winner Trinity Sheward, 7, said she was glad she placed in the top three.

“My mom told me there’s (a lot) of people that didn’t get to win,” Sheward, a first grader at Meadowlark Elementary said, adding that she also was confident in her ability to wield a crayon. “It was easy to color.”

Third place winner Jacob Michael, 7, a second grader at Lakeside Elementary, said he was satisfied with where he stood at the winner’s platform.

“Well, it’s better than not placing at all,” Michael said. “Coloring the picture wasn’t very difficult, but it took several days to finish it.”

Firefighter Bobby Gardullo said the contest was a hit.

“We feel like it was a success,” Gardullo said. “Captain Terry Lucchi had a big part in it. I’d like to see it happen again next week.”
