LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Trial and error won't work out

Dear Editor,
Trial and error experimentation is a hard way to learn – you can learn a lot about your kitty-cat by lifting her by her tail, but it’s a hard way to learn.

Yet, that is what Gov. Brownback is proposing for Kansas.  He says his plans for Kansas are an experiment – an experiment in which those at the top are given more tax breaks and in which state revenues will fall.  Think of it in terms of your car’s gas tank. If you drain 1/4 of the tank, you will not improve how far or how efficiently you can travel.

When you decrease taxes for the wealthy, you still must keep the tank full. Where is that shortfall going to come from?  Who is going to cover that deficit? The tooth fairy?

Of course not. It’s the middle and lower class citizens who will be squeezed even harder. Property taxes will rise; sales and use taxes will rise, while services are cut more and more. Public education and social services will pay a heavy price for Gov. Brownback’s grand experiment.

To counter the governor’s plan for Kansas, it is important that we send level-headed, middle-of-the-road, working class individuals to the state legislature.  We need people such as Bob Grant and Julie Menghini in Topeka fighting for our middle class values – representatives who understand the need and importance of building a strong middle class.

Gov. Brownback, stop asking Kansans to pick up the kitty-cat by the tail!
