Two birthdays were celebrated April 29 in the Arcadia Christian Church. Gifts were given by Carol Bridgewater and for Walter Parrish by his mother, Vera Parrish. Walter Parrish, who turned 60 and now lives in Texas, grew up in the church. It was announced that Lloyd Houk, gospel singer, will have an old time gospel sing and concert at 7 p.m. May 12. Refreshments will be served and a free-will offering will be accepted. Dave Bridgewater will be guest minister on May 20.

The City of Arcadia is having a clean-up through Friday, with dumpsters behind the Arcadia Community Center and at the Ball Park.

Class No. 10 met April 18 with seven women present. President Patty Peterson opened the meeting with both flag pledges. Carol Bridgewater gave the lesson about “The Woman Who Washed Jesus’ Feet.” There was a discussion on fundraising events in bygone days. One was an old fashioned fish fry held in the upstairs part of the Masonic Building. Fish were purchased by the barrel and fried by the women of Class No. 10. A card was signed for Emory Briggs. Members answered roll call by telling their Mother’s Day plans. Only two of the seven women present have living mothers. The president closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer and Irish blessing. Michelle Castro served homemade chocolate cake with fruited ice cream. Others present were Judy Rawlings, Carole Garrison, Betty Dehn and Mary V. Shead.

Larry Shead celebrated his 62nd birthday by inviting family members to his Garland farm home April 20 for a wiener roast. Present, in addition to the honoree and wife Vickie, were his brother and wife, Ralph and Cindy Shead, Carl Junction, Mo., and the men’s mother, Mary V. Shead, Arcadia. Shead’s son and his family, Mark, Haley, Katy and Benjamin Shead, Fort Scott, were visiting her mother in Texas. Ralph Shead made a special cherry spice cake for his brother’s birthday.

Arcadia friends were saddened to hear of the death of two former Arcadia residents. Mary E. Gazaway, 80, Girard, died April 13. She was the daughter of Charlie and Mabel Foulk and married Jack Gazaway in March 1949 in Arcadia. She worked as a medication aid in Girard for more than 47 years, retiring in 1997. Earl Hines died March 4 at the age of 88 in Sheridan, Ore. He was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Arcadia to Oscar and Effie Hines and married Lois Scratcher on Dec. 2, 1950. They had two children, Mike Hines and Connie Love. Also surviving is sister Mary Cattaneo, Mulberry. Hines was preceded in death by sisters Opal Jones and Ruby Halbert and brothers Orval, Jim and Dude Hines. All were raised in Arcadia.

Presbyterian Village, Fort Scott, will have a Good Samaritan auction and dinner  on May 17. Dinner with Chicken Annie’s chicken and homemade desserts will be served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with the auction beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets will be $7 per person.

Fort Scott Manor celebrated its 50th anniversary on the weekend of April 21.  Activities included a dinner April 20 and cookout with musical entertainment on April 21. Tom and Phyllis Watt attended the cookout with his mother, Mae Watt, a resident of the facility. She was recently elected vice  president of the Residents Council. On April 22 Mrs. Watt had a visit from Bill Cambers and his sister, Helen Jean Green, former Arcadia residents.

The Arcadia Christian Church held its yearly women’s spring retreat March 31 with 28 women attending from Arcadia, Arma, Redfield, Fort Scott, Mulberry, Joplin, Liberal, Mo., and Pittsburg. Special music was given by Patty McCullough, Pittsburg, and speaker was Kristin Peterson Girard, Joplin, a former member of the church. Breakfast and lunch were served. Pamper times and crafts were included in the day, along with skits and drawings for gifts. Carol Bridgewater gave a reading and Janelle Bunny sang a solo. Betty Dehn closed the day with a blessing for each woman attending.

There is a new newspaper, Bourbon County Review, being published by H&H Publishing, LLC, at 14 S. Main, Fort Scott. Arcadia news reported by Mary V. Shead will be included in the newspaper.
