Everything seemed to go right for Fort Scott, just as everything seemed to go wrong for Pittsburg during their High School League softball game Wednesday evening on the main field of the PSU Softball Complex — from speedy Fort Scott leadoff hitter Maddie Allen reaching on a bunt single to Pittsburg hitting into a double play to end the game, a 8-1 Fort Scott win.

Fort Scott plated four runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth, totaling 10 hits.

Third baseman Sidney Maycumber hit a two-run single in the first, after Allen and Riley Brown reached on back-to-back bunt hits. Maycumber scored on an infield single and starting pitcher Kyenne Wade scored on a wild pitch.

Pittsburg scored its only run in the bottom half of the first, without a single hit. Andie Casper led off with a walk, Wade hit Neely Henry with a pitch and Alaura Short reached on an error to load the bases with one down. Katy Short took ball four to score Casper. However, Wade struck out three Pittsburg hitters in the inning and Pittsburg left the bases loaded.

Kenzie Heatherly plated two runs with her single in the second, Ericah Shoemaker hit a solo home run over the wall in left center in the third and Maycumber tripled in Heatherly to close out the scoring in the fourth.

Meanwhile, Pittsburg struggled offensively against Wade. Wade fanned three in the first, three in the second and two in the third. After three innings, Pittsburg had no hits and reached base on two walks, three hit batters and one fielding error.

In the bottom of the fourth, Katy Short gave Pittsburg its lone hit on a perfectly-executed bunt single. Abby Herring bunted over Short and Short was on third base with one down. However, on a Mercedes Vogel pop-up, Short went too far toward home and Fort Scott doubled up Short at third, ending the game on that note.

Pittsburg plays Frontenac (6 p.m.) and Columbus (9 p.m.) next Wednesday on the main field of the PSU Softball Complex. Liberal (Mo.) and Labette County play the game in-between Pittsburg showdowns.
