PITTSBURG —
Among the credits not listed for retiring fire chief Scott Crain was his interest in an emergency preparedness program. He made some preliminary plans for this but he was aware this was not a one-man problem and with a complacent city commission and city manager, he had little chance for achievement and my final “crusade” went “kaput.”
Thanks to Dr. John Bailey, my other “crusade” involving our 100-year-old water mains is making progress.
If our new “commander in chief” does not fel capable of tackling an emergency preparedness problem, perhaps he could persuade out “soon to retire” sheriff Sandy Horton, who has been critical of our deficiency, to help.
The only discussion I have heard from our commission on safety was a lengthy inane diatribe on the danger of ice falling from a proposed cell phone tower on American Legion property, the lack of results of numerous phone calls to other cities and the proposal to make Lincoln School a tornado haven.
Maybe sometime in the future works like “triage”, “base of operations,” “delegation of authority,” “ambulance availability,” “emergency lighting,” “traffic control,” “temporary morgues,” “natural gas and electric cutoffs,” “elderly and shut-ins,” etc. will become part of our city vocabulary, but don’t count on it with our present administration.
