Twelve Girard Kayette board members and officers attended the 2012 KAY Regional Conference at Altoona-Midway Wednesday, Nov. 7, where they received the Gold Award.
The Kansas Association for Youth, or KAY, “is a character-building, leadership training program directed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.” The program promotes students to serve their schools, communities, nation and world.
The Girard Kayette organization, formerly known as Y-Teens, is in its 81st year and has remained an all-girl program in the school.
This year there are 155 Kayette members including five officers and 19 board members. Twelve of these officers and board members attended the regional conference.
2011-2012 Area 2 president and current Girard Kayette president Taylor Evans and State Director Cheryl Gleason addressed the conference on the values of being in KAY.
Angel Romero spoke about the influence KAY had on his life and encouraged current members to attend the KAY summer leadership camp.
Following this, Ms. Gleason recognized the chapters based on their involvement in the previous school year. Girard received the highest honor, the Gold Award, for their leadership and service.
Students then broke into groups based on their officer positions to discuss ideas for club improvement. Girard co-sponsor Kayla Pruitt and officers Stephanie Moutz and Aubri Ashbacher led the vice president officer network meeting.
After the meetings, the students were dismissed to meet with their clubs and share their ideas and listened to guest speakers on leadership skills.
In the closing session Ms. Evans proctored the selection for the new area president and stepped down from her office.
“The regional conference went very well! I’m really happy with the way it turned out. The students had a blast, everything was well-organized and everybody came up with awesome ideas to take back to their clubs,” Ms. Evans said.
Regarding Ms. Evans’ time as president, Mrs. Pruitt said, “Taylor did an excellent job leading the regional conference, and she represented our school well. I am really proud of her for all the hard work she has put in over the last year as KAY Area 2 president.”
GHS students who participated include Aubri Ashbacher, Bethany Baker, Hayden Bauer, Shaylene Copenhaver, Trisha Elder, Taylor Evans, Ashley Horton, Kayla Morrison, Stephanie Moutz, Kristen O’Toole, Courtney Page and Trinadie Puckett.
