Thanks to an assist from an airplane, local officers were able to chase down a suspected car thief.
At 8:40 a.m., Pittsburg police officers responded to Jay Hatfield Motors, 4005 N. Broadway, on a report of a stolen vehicle. An unknown person had stolen a 2006 Ford F-150 from the lot, where the vehicle had been left running and unattended.
A salesman saw the theft and followed the car north on U.S. 69 to U.S. 47, where it turned west. The vehicle turned off on 200th Street and went south to 590th Street, where the salesman lost sight of the car.
The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol arrived and found the car in a field, unattended, at 200th and 590th streets.
A search for the driver prompted the use of an airplane from Chanute to help with the search, which found a man hiding in a tree row about a half mile south of where the stolen truck was found.
Matthew Allen Broyles, 28, Pittsburg, was identified, arrested for felony theft and taken to the Crawford County Jail.
