School and law enforcement officials evacuated Pittsburg High School Monday afternoon after a written bomb threat was discovered in the building.

Pittsburg Police Department officials were not available to comment on the threat, but said in a release that police and Pittsburg Fire Department officials responded to the report at about 2:07 p.m. Students and faculty were evacuated across the street to Countryside Christian Church, where they waited in the gymnasium for the all-clear signal. Police and fire officials conducted a search of the school but did not find evidence of bomb materials, the release said.

District officials said it has been several years since the school received a bomb threat. They declined to comment on where the written threat was found, and said that any time missed due to the threat would be made up. Additionally, sports practices were to resume once the building had been cleared.

The district has an agreement with Countryside Christian Church to serve as a gathering point for evacuations, and Superintendent Destry Brown said officials did not hesitate to evacuate the building.

“It is our policy to take every bomb threat seriously,” Brown said.

Senior Sean Perkins said he was in class when officials decided to evacuate the building.

“They made an announcement over the intercom for teachers to check their e-mails, and then we started leaving immediately,” Perkins said as he waited for his ride home.

Perkins said he remembered the previous threat, but was unclear when it was.

“I knew what it was when we had to come outside and the bomb squad was here and everything was structured,” Perkins said. “I wasn’t worried, though.”
