The Frontenac Raiders took care of business on Homecoming, rolling up 49 first-half points en route to a 56-0 shellacking of Erie Friday night. The win puts Frontenac at 2-3 on the season, with Baxter Springs coming to town next week.
Are the Raiders hitting their stride after a tough early-season run?
“We kind of rode our win last week against Colgan,” coach Mark Smith said. “That first win just gave them so much confidence and you could see that tonight. We’re starting to play well as a team.”
The Raiders simply overpowered the Red Devils, scoring on their first three drives of the game to lead 22-0 after the first quarter. They set the tone on the opening drive of the game, marching 71 yards on nine plays, capped by a four-yard touchdown run by Taylor Johnson at the 8:12 mark of the first.
“That was a great drive on offense to start the game,” Smith said. “We started the game off well on both sides of the ball, and that was very good to see. We were intense, and ready to go.”
Following a Brett Macary interception, Frontenac drove 33 yards on four plays to score its second touchdown and take a commanding 14-0 lead. Quarterback Devon Keith hit Jace Burdette on a 16-yard pass play to the Red Devil 5 to set up Ethan Powell’s touchdown run.
From that point of the game, the rout was on. After a Smith one-yard run made it 22-0, the Raiders got back-to-back touchdowns on fumble recoveries by senior lineman Blake Barto to push their lead to 36-0 with 5:51 left before halftime.
Johnson added his second touchdown, a 25-yard run, and fullback Taylor Smithson capped ran it from three yards out following a botched punt by Erie to cap a 29-point second quarter outburst.
The clock did not stop after halftime, and most of Frontenac’s starters were done for the night by midway through the second quarter.
The Red Devils coughed up three first-half fumbles, and the Raiders picked off Erie quarterback Justin Hartzell twice in the first half. The five first-half turnovers led to 28 Frontenac points – including Barto’s two touchdowns.
After an 0-3 start, the Raiders have won two straight.
“We’re making strides to get better and we just have to keep doing it,” Smith said. “They’re having fun, playing for each other, and that’s what it’s all about.”
In limited duty, Keith led Frontenac with 76 yards rushing and 40 yards passing. Powell finished with 42 yards on eight carries and Johnson had 43 yards on six carries. Overall the Red Devils finished with minus 21 yards rushing and only 68 yards of total offense.
Chase Turner and John Barrows also had interceptions for the Raiders. Frontenac outgained Erie 224 to minus 14 in the first half.
The Devils fell to 1-4.
