Who's News: Arcadia

Arcadia Christian Church has announced a city-wide meeting at 4 p.m. Sunday in the parsonage for the Santa Project. A chili and soup supper benefit will be held Nov. 3 in the Arcadia Community Center for the Bridgewater Santa Project, with a pie auction scheduled at the same time.  A household shower for Cathy Allen will be held following the JOY  Class dinner meeting Oct. 15 at the Arcadia Christian Church bungalow. A carry-in dinner will be served at 6 p.m. It was also announced that the Gideons will present services at the church on Oct. 21. These projects are open to all.

Mark Shead was honored on his 37th birthday with a brunch Oct. 6 at the Lyons Twin Mansion Bed and Breakfast  Restaurant in Fort Scott. It was held following the soccer game he coaches for children, including his daughter, Katy Shead. Other relatives attending the game and brunch were Haley Shead, her mother, D.J. Davis from Georgetown, Texas, Benjamin Shead, Larry and Vickie Shead, Garland, and Mary V. Shead, Arcadia. The next day Mrs. Davis left for her home in Texas.

Arcadia residents saw the news of Justin Michael Hueston, 22, who died recently in a motorcycle/auto wreck. His paternal grandfather, Raymond Hueston, Mapleton, may be one of a pair of twins born and raised in rural Arcadia who attended Arcadia High School.

Tom and Bonnie Reese, Atchison, were in Missouri a week ago to visit with Harold and Birdie Malone in Liberal. They were neighbors when the Reese family lived in the Oskaloosa, Mo., area. At that time Tom Reese was a farm employee of Gary Peterson, Arcadia.

George and Dorothy Quier, Joplin, helped Matthew Shead give his wife, Ashley, a surprise for her birthday on Sept. 22. Mr. and Mrs. Quier were teachers in Arcadia in the early 1950s and again in the 1960s. When the Arcadia High School closed in 1965, Quier was a teacher as well as principal and superintendent. Mrs. Quier was a grade school music teacher.  Matthew Shead is the grandson of Mary Virginia Shead and the late Paul Shead, Arcadia. He was born in Chile while his parents were serving there as missionaries. The surprise was the first sailing experience for Ashley Shead, along with her husband and his parents, Ralph and Cindy Shead. When the breeze failed, the outboard motor did not. As the craft approached the Sailboat Bridge near Grove, Okla., the crew learned one of the rules of sailing from “Captain George” Quier: “Don’t hit the bridge!” Ralph Shead shared two memories of  his school days. One was of Mrs. Quier teaching him to sing harmony in a small group. Under her direction, Arcadia Grade School was the envy of other schools at the annual music contest. The other memory was of Mr. and Mrs. Quier teaching the Shead family the easiest way to butter hot corn on the cob, which is to roll the hot corn on top of the stick of  butter.

Phil Casey, who pastored the Arcadia Christian Church in the 1970s while he was attending Ozark Christian College, Joplin, recently made a trip to Eastern Europe to visit missionaries supported by his church, College Heights Christian Church of Joplin. He accompanied other church leaders to the field where the missionaries include his son, Chris Casey, wife Aubrey and their daughter, Lejla Mej, 1 1/2. Casey reported that his granddaughter is learning to express her emotions in words. At one point during his visit, Lejla took his finger and led him out to the swings. On the way she said, “Happy, happy.”
