Bryan Burks and Joe Curran have been recognized for their contributions to education and their community. Both were selected by statewide organizations for excelling in their respective fields.

SRO named Officer of the Year
The Kansas Juvenile Officer Association honored SRO Bryan Burks as KSJOA School Resource Officer of the Year.

Mr. Burks graduated from Girard High School in 1984 and has been working in law enforcement since 1986. He has been working for the Girard Police Department since 1995 and has spent the last seven years as USD 248 School Resource Officer.

KSJOA is group of Kansas SRO and DARE officers combined to provide training and education to people who work with juveniles.

His daughter, BryAnna Burks-Thornton, nominated him and was required to write an essay on why he deserved the award.

SRO Burks, who received the honor at the annual KSJOA conference in mid-July, said, “I was really surprised! I had no idea she had nominated me. It’s nice to be recognized with such an honor.”

Officer Burks has been the treasurer of KSJOA for seven years and has also worked for the Pittsburg State University Police Department for the past six years.

He is a GHS assistant softball coach and sponsors the Seatbelts Are For Everyone organization (SAFE).

Mr. Burks has been a part of the Girard community all his life and is a member of the Girard Methodist Church.

“The Girard Police Department, high school and community are huge reasons why I received this award. I could not have done it without their support,” Mr. Burks said.

Ag Ed instructor receives title of Outstanding Teacher
The Kansas Association for Career and Technical Education board recently selected Girard High School agricultural education teacher Joe Curran as the Outstanding Teacher in Community Service.

Mr. Curran graduated from GHS in 1985 and has been an ag educator and FFA advisor for the past 23 years, the past six years in Girard.

Last school year Mr. Curran was nominated and unanimously selected for this award by the Southeast District ag teachers. After that, he completed an application to be considered for the honor.

When asked about the recognition, Mr. Curran said, “I don’t feel any more deserving than any other hardworking Kansas ag teacher, but I am honored to represent the Southeast District in such a way.”

He feels that it is necessary to contribute wholeheartedly to the community in order to deserve any kind of praise.

In his area, he serves on the Crawford County Fair Board, Wildcat Extension Board and the Kansas Livestock Association as a county director. He is a member of the National Cattlemen’s Association, Farm Bureau, St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Curran has served on the Kansas Association of Ag Educators state legislative committee since 1991 and the mentoring committee since 2006. He has participated in eight Region II Conferences and has not missed a Career and Technical Educators summer conference in the last 23 years.
