WALNUT — Eighty-eight of the best cyclists in the four-state area gathered in tiny Walnut (pop. 220) for the Kansas State Time Trial Championship bicycle race Saturday morning.

The town was a beehive of activity all morning as the area elite battled for their part of over $2200 in cash and the state title. Music thumped and the wind blew while clouds threatened to no effect to open up during the race.

Bruce Tanner (OKC Velo) turned in the fastest time of the day, covering the 25 miles in 53 minutes, 43 seconds and dominating the Men 50-59 group.

Andrew Coe (Mercy Health) came in hot on his heels with 54.13, which proved fast enough to win the Elite Category 1-2 men 19-29.

Local athletes included Jacob Cauble (Joplin — BMC Racing), who turned in a powerful 58:13 to take second in the Category 3 men, and PSU student Jon Mayfield (Tailwind Cyclists) cranked out a 1:03:33 to place ninth in the Category 4 men.

Shawn Morelli (Leavenworth — Santa Fe Trails Bikes), a recovering combat soldier, won the Category 3 women's race in 1:01:45.

Tailwind Cyclists will host two more state championship events August 4th and 5th. The long-distance Road Race and short-circuit Criterium will determine the fastest and longest-lasting racers in Kansas. Check with Tailwind Cyclists for volunteer and spectator opportunities.
