Jake Webb of the Watco Nationals proved to be a double threat in a Frank German game Thursday night against the Rotary Orioles.

At the plate, Webb collected hits for RBI all three at-bats — his RBI triple in the first plated second baseman Blayne Baldwin, his RBI single in the third plated Freeman and his two-RBI single in the fourth plated both Freeman and No. 2 hitter Whit Dungan. On that RBI triple, a Rotary Orioles misplay on the relay throw from the outfield allowed Webb to score on the play.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Webb allowed two runs on three hits and he finished with four strikeouts as Watco rolled to a 9-2 win.

Watco power hitters Webb and Matt Lomshek gave Orioles right fielder Carter Uttley fits in the first on two hard-hit balls which ended in triples for Webb and Lomshek, although Webb scored after the Orioles mishandled a throw.

The Orioles scored their first run in the second on back-to-back hits by starting pitcher Jeremiah Buche and outfielder Ethan Tomasi. Buche singled and Tomasi cracked a run-scoring double over the head of the center fielder.

After the Nationals answered with a run in the top of the third, the Orioles scored their final run with the help of the speedy Darien Boyd in the nine spot. Boyd laced a single, stole second (kicking up a cloud of dust), advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home on a Dalton Gromer single.

The Nationals once again responded with runs in the fourth — four runs on three runs and three walks against reliever Chris Wood. A key play was the bunt single by Freeman to load the bases — his perfectly-executed bunt up the third-base line applied pressure on the Orioles defense.

Zach Barber scored on a fielder’s choice and then Webb came through with his big two-RBI hit. Baldwin scored when Scott Maxwell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Webb attempted to steal home was tagged out at the plate by Gromer.

Lomshek relieved Webb in the fourth and pitched two scoreless innings.

The Nationals improved to 5-3-1 on the season, only trailing the Comeau Jewelry Rockies in the National standings. The Orioles fell to 5-4.

Watco next plays Monday against Comeau Jewelry and Rotary plays again Tuesday against Comeau Jewelry. Rotary and Watco also play again next Thursday — playing each other on consecutive Thursdays.
