CCBA gained a 10-0 lead after two innings, then Pizza Hut answered with 10 runs over the next two innings during a Don Gutteridge League barnburner Tuesday night at Al Ortolani Field, all setting up the scenario for a dramatic fifth inning on the campus of Pittsburg State University.

CCBA outfielder Austin Seward led off the top half of the fifth with a walk and later worked his way around the bases for the game-winning run — he stole his second base of the night at second, moved to third on a 5-3 groundout and scored on a wild pitch, sliding home safely into a giant cloud of dust.

CCBA brought on Drake Markley in the bottom of the fifth and he struck out Connor Smith, Corbin Russell and Caden Bolinger, no panic evident after walking Ethan Snider with one down and the game on the line.

Pizza Hut fell behind early due to starter Bryce Barto and reliever Tanner Forrest struggling with their control — the Pizza Hut duo combined for seven walks and one hit batter over the first innings.

Pizza Hut committed two costly throwing errors in the second, one directly leading to two runs as an overthrow at first base went into the outfield deep enough for Markley and Austin Sievert to sprint in for a 8-0 lead.

Markley and Sievert plated runs home on back-to-back hits in the first — a Markley double scored Seward and a Sievert single scored Colin Coronado.

On the precipice of a run-rule loss, Pizza Hut snapped out of its funk in the bottom of the third and the bottom of the fourth.

In the third, Barto hit a two-run double scoring Caden and Keaton Bolinger and Andrew Stewart scored Barto with a RBI double. Dom Piccini scored on a wild pitch in-between the at-bats of Barto and Stewart.

In the fourth, Pizza Hut relied on some more timely hits — Keaton Bolinger hit a two-run single plating Russell and Snider and Barto hit a two-run single plating Forrest and Bolinger. Barto scored the game-tying run on a Stewart single, after Barto stole his way into scoring position.

Barto drove in four runs for Pizza Hut, winners of two straight entering Tuesday. In fact, Pizza Hut averaged 14 runs scored its previous two games after managing only three runs in the season opener against Millers.

CCBA improves to 3-1 and Pizza Hut drops to 2-2.

The Gutteridge League played doubleheaders at Ortolani Field on Monday and Tuesday. No games will be held today, then a doubleheader will be played Thursday at JayCee Ballpark (normal home of the Gutteridge League) and one more twinbill on Friday at Bill Russell Field.
