Pittsburg No. 2 catcher Hannah Drenik slides into third after moving forward on an overthrow. Drenik hit a double which scored Sarah Lundberg in the third and Drenik herself would later score on a wild pitch. Despite the best efforts of Drenik, Pittsburg lost 7-3 to Colgan in a High School League softball game Wednesday evening at the PSU Sports Complex.

Colgan and Pittsburg share facilities (Hutchinson Field in football, JayCee Ballpark in baseball and Cheryl Stice Field in softball) and their athletes play together on the same American Legion or summer league baseball teams.

However, on Wednesday, Colgan faced Pittsburg No. 2 in a High School League softball game on the main field of the PSU Softball Complex.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the third, Colgan went back ahead 6-3 with a four-run outburst en route to a 7-3 win.

Pittsburg catcher and leadoff batter Hannah Drenik reached on a game-opening bunt and worked her way around to score on a wild pitch. Drenik accounted for every Pittsburg run one way or another — she came home twice on wild pitches and doubled home Sarah Lundberg in the third.

Otherwise, Colgan pitcher Ali Noyes found a groove, striking out every batter after Drenik in the first and then two in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth for a grand total of seven Ks. Pittsburg went down in order in the second and fifth innings.

Four different Colgan players created run-producing hits — Noyes and Faith VanBecelaere hit RBI singles in the first, Jordan Fleming a two-run double in the third and Madison Marietta hit a RBI double before Marietta went for a triple and Pittsburg left fielder Molly Lundberg threw her out at third.

Aggressive baserunning resulted in five different Colgan players combining for seven stolen bases — two each by Noyes and Lauren Jameson and one apiece by Amanda McBride, VanBecelaere and Sicily Stahl.

Football camp participation sometimes affects participation in summer baseball leagues and on Wednesday night, Colgan players McBride and Andrea Bolinger, as well as Pittsburg center fielder Abby Herring, showed up right before their respective teams walked onto the field. McBride and Bolinger came over from the Pittsburg State women’s basketball team camp.

The High School League brings together various communities from the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League and Southeast Kansas League — two Pittsburg teams, Colgan, Frontenac, Girard, Fort Scott, Labette County, Parsons, Columbus, Riverton, Galena and Liberal, Mo.

The league plays three games at four sites every Wednesday night in June — three games at Bill Russell or Wild Red Berry and three games at three different fields in the PSU Softball Complex.
