Pittsburg State University officials announced Friday the school will defer the induction of Oscar Gonzalez into its Athletics Hall of Fame per Gonzalez’ request.

Gonzalez, who was selected along with six other individuals among the Class of 2010 for the PSU Athletics Hall of Fame in July, discovered earlier this week he would not be able to travel from his native Spain to Pittsburg for the ceremony on Sept. 18.

The former All-American point guard who helped head coach Gene Iba capture the school’s first MIAA title and make its first appearances in the NCAA Tournament in the late 1990s is currently competing in his final season of professional basketball in Spain.

“Oscar contacted us earlier this week to share the disappointing news that he could not travel back to Pittsburg for the ceremony due to his basketball commitments,” PSU Athletics Hall of Fame chair Dan Wilkes said. “He inquired if PSU would consider delaying his induction for a year, which would allow him the opportunity to attend the event next year following his retirement from professional basketball.  Our university administration was supportive of this alternative, and we’ll look forward to Oscar being a member of the Class of 2011.”
