One hundred two parents of RVH students attended Parent Education Night on Jan. 26 where they listened to a guest speaker and attended breakout sessions on various topics.

Guest speaker was Dr. Gina Pinamonti, who spoke through a program called Love and Logic®.

She accepted the invitation to speak because she thinks parenting is extremely difficult when parents are doing so many different things.

Dr. Pinamonti said, “If you ground your child, you ground yourself, and it takes practice. I found this resource [Love and Logic®] when my girls were five or six, and it has helped me keep my composure or realize, when I lose it, how to get back on track. I still refer to the tapes a lot.”

During her presentation Dr. Pinamonti spoke about raising responsible children by letting them make minor mistakes with short-term consequences instead of making major mistakes later with long-term consequences.

In addition, she encouraged parents to give their children allowances to teach them responsibility.

Another thing Dr. Pinamonti encouraged parents to do was to be good role models for their children to set a good example for them. She also said to give children a task to do and let them fail, not because parents want their children to be unsuccessful, but because if they fail, they won’t make that same mistake later in life.
When they do fail, she said, “Respond with empathy and love and then present them with the same task again.”

She encouraged parents to visit the website loveandlogic.com that provides daily pointers for small issues that arise with children.

Following Dr. Pinamonti’s presentation, parents selected two 30-minute breakout sessions to attend.

Breakout sessions and presenters included the following:

How to Read an AIMSweb Report and What Is MTSS, Tyler Jackman and Tina Peak; Saxon Math—How Long, How Often, and How Much Homework Should My Child Have, Kay Mein, Tracy Belcher and Clara Black; Bullying and How it Affects My Child, Trish Denham; Make it/Take it—Activities to Help Kindergarten and First Grade Students, Dina Blevins and Shirley Lechien; How Can I Help My Child in Reading, Donna Martin, Robin Wutke and Carrie Smith.

Fun Educational Websites for Children, Lisa Harris and Jennifer Ziegler; Eating Healthy on a Tight Budget, Stacey Grabrick; What Is the After School Based Challenger Program, Emily Gronau; Services Provided by the Crawford County Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas, Dawn McNay; PTO Box Tops 101—How to Make Money for Your School Organization, Melodee Knopp; and The Dolly Parton Imaginary Library, Rhonda Ison.

Regarding the overall success of the night, Principal Tom Stegman said, “Parent Education Night is an opportunity for the staff at RVH to give back to our parents. The event provided parents and teachers the opportunity to communicate techniques that parents can use at home to assist their child with academic needs.

“I would also like to thank all the community businesses and patrons who donated the door prizes for this event. The RVH staff and I truly appreciate all the support the community gives to our students!”
