Dear editor:
Garbage trucks are tearing up Pittsburg streets, and taxpayers are paying the price. Such is the essence of the letter to the editor in Saturday’s Morning Sun.
The letter presents a dazzling array of government statistics with numbers so large that they are spelled out for those readers unskilled in higher mathematics. The purpose in presenting all this nationwide data must be to be able to blame a garbage truck for damage every time it passes down a Pittsburg street.
But, as evidenced in Pittsburg, AGE is a big factor in pavement failure, just as the weather is the big player in aging. Since streets and highways are totally exposed to the elements year-round, they are continually rising and falling, shrinking and expanding, and consequently, deteriorating.
These are facts, not statistics. This is why concrete slabs have expansion joints, and ever-expanding cracks in asphalt topping demand more asphalt.
With abrupt change of subject, the last clause of the letter advocates the lowering of “resident trash pickup costs.”
Note: In all of the dialogue about trash hauling and trash haulers in recent weeks, there has been not a syllable of complaint from the public about present garbage collection services or charges.
