Tabatha Schoonover didn’t expect to spend New Year’s Eve having a baby. But, at 12:35 a.m. Jan. 1, 2013, her beautiful little girl, Brooklin Nicole, became the Via Christi Hospital New Year’s baby.
“She was four weeks early,” Schoonover said. “It kind of ruins your New Year’s Eve plans.”
Originally from Neodesha, Schoonover said she came to Pittsburg to attend school and work.
“I was at work around 8:30 a.m. Monday when contractions started,” she said. “I kind of ignored it and kept on working, but when I got off at 3 p.m., I decided I’d better come in and get checked out.”
The baby weighed in at six pounds, 15 ounces, and is 19 1/2 inches long. She was delivered by Dennis Higginbotham, M.D.
Schoonover said she chose the name Brooklin for her first child because she had always liked it. The middle name, Nicole, is for her godmother.
“This is great that she will always be remembered as the first baby born at the hospital in 2013,” the new mother said.
She noted that New Year’s babies seem to run in her family. Other family members, born in Neodesha, arrived on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3. Brooklin Nicole is the only one so far to be born on Jan. 1.
She is also the first New Year’s baby born in the new Women’s Center which opened in April at Via Christi.
The new unit encompasses the entire third floor of the hospital, featuring five labor rooms, 13 postpartum rooms, two triage rooms, an expanded nursery, an expanded operating suite for C-section delivery and central fetal monitoring systems.
“Everybody has been so nice and helpful up here,” Schoonover said. “I definitely would recommend it.”
Janelle Wade, RN, director of Women’s Services, said that she and her staff were honored to take care of Brooklin and her mother.
“This is the start of another great year at Via Christi, as we look forward to caring for the future generations of our community,” Wade said.
Michael Hayslip, Via Christi director of public relations, said that the mother and New Year’s baby will be presented with a gift basket.
