On the 13th of December, for the first time ever, advanced students from St. Paul High School Band provided music before and after the annual Christmas program, directed by Mr. James Harris. Jonathan Thomas, Alex Butler, and Anthony Shetler played ‘Carol of the Bells’ on their guitars, playing for thirty minutes, both before, and after the program.

“We have a few kids who can play the guitar very well, so I wanted to try it because it might be the only chance they get to perform, and I wanted to see if people liked it or not,” Mr. Harris stated when asked what made him want to try something new this year.
“I think it turned out wonderfully!” he said.

A neat twist they had decided upon was to play the song in both acoustic and electric – using acoustic guitars before the program, and electric guitars afterwards. The guitars are brought from home by the kids, or are brought by Mr. Harris.

Thomas, Butler, and Shetler volunteered to do it, and with a little encouragement from Mr. Harris and lots of practice, they did something no one had thought to do before. “I think people were more surprised by the fact we were sitting on chairs on the riser than that we were actually playing,” Alex Butler said. Showing their talent and interest in music, they made this year’s music program one to remember.
