Late Monday evening, the Frontenac USD 249 school board accepted the resignation of superintendent Dr. Dale Slagle.
"I'm making a change. I'll leave it at that," Slagle said when reached for comment. "I love the students, the staff and my church. It's time for a change."
Slagle said he was not necessarily retiring, but turned in his resignation on Monday, and it was accepted by a 6-1 vote of the USD 249 school board. Barbara Barto was the sole no vote.
Slagle said he was looking at his next options and declined comment about the reason behind the change.
"It's something I'm doing professionally. For me, I'd rather not add to the speculation," he said.
Megan Fry, school board member, said the issue is a personnel matter and what has been made public is Slagle's resignation.
"As far as I know, it was his decision," Fry said. "The letter of resignation didn't indicate a reason. The rest was in executive session."
Board president Mike Bitner said Slagle was not facing any sort of disciplinary action and that he was "surprised, but not shocked" at the resignation. He said there was no ulterior motive or issue behind the resignation, and expressed support for Slagle's tenure as superintendent.
"He's a great person. He's a good individual," Bitner said. "The board, to a person, wish nothing but the best in his future endeavors. He's done wonderful things for our schools. We appreciate everything he's done. He's a quality guy."
The opening has already been posted on several job boards, and Pittsburg State will be assisting as consultants in the search. PSU has served in a similar role in the search for other local superintendent openings.
PSU and Frontenac officials will meet at 6 p.m. at the school board office on Wednesday, Jan. 23, and will be open to the public.
